Explore Atlanta During 31 Days of Jazz in May!

This May we invite people to get out and explore our city during the Atlanta Jazz Festival’s 31 Days of Jazz,” says Camille Russell Love, Executive Director of the City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs. “Walk, ride your bike, jump on the Streetcar, take MARTA, or come into the city from OTP to explore Atlanta’s beautiful neighborhood parks, hottest clubs, multi-cultural restaurants, and diverse museums. We’ve got something going on every day in May featuring incredible jazz musicians. For a complete list of events, visit our web site at www.atlantafestivals.com.”

Here are a just a few of this year’s highlights:

May 1     Music in the Park featuring singer Theresa Hightower; renowned drummer, Chris Dave and many more!  This event is from 1-7 pm and takes place in Atlanta’s West End.

May 3     Bassist Kevin Scott hosts a jam beginning at 9 pm at Elliott Street Pub

May 4     Saxophonist Kamasi Washington at 8 pm at Variety Playhouse

May 5     Harper Family Jazz Jam beginning at 9 pm at Churchill Grounds

May 7     Jazz under the Stars featuring violinist Ken Ford at 6 pm at Jonesboro’s Lee Street Park

May 10    ATL Live on the Park at 7:30 pm at Park Tavern

May 11    Lunchtime Jazz with singer Brenda Moorer at noon at Atlanta City Hall

May 13    Juan De Marcos & Afro-Cuban Allstars at 8 pm at Variety Playhouse

May 14    Annual Spring Vespers under the direction of pastor and saxophonist Dwight Andrews at 7 pm at the First Congregational Church

May 17    Trumpeter Joe Gransden’s Jazz Jam beginning at 9 pm at Venkman’s

May 20    Saxophonist TIA FULLER at 7:30 pm at The Velvet Note

May 21    Funk Jazz Café celebrates their 20th Anniversary at 9 pm at The Tabernacle

May 26    Lunchtime Jazz at noon at Colony Square

May 2                    Brazilian guitarist Sander Pinheiro at Chamblee Station

May 9                    Saxophonist Mike Walton and his Quartet at Five Points Station

May 16                  Alternative jazz artists Indie Revenge at Lakewood Station

May 1     Singer Julie Dexter hosted by Council Member Sheperd at Perkerson Park

May 7     Singer & pianist Freddy Cole hosted by Council Member Bottoms at John A. White Park

*Note the event at John A. White Park will go from 3-7 pm and will be followed by a screening of “Annie” the movie starring Jamie Foxx.

May 8     Trumpeter Russell Gunn hosted by Council Member Archibong at Oakland Cemetery

May 15     Trumpeter Gordon Vernick hosted by Council Member Wan at Howell Park

May 21     Singer Julie Dexter hosted by Council Member Young at Washington Park

May 22     Singer Julie Dexter hosted by Council Members Mitchell & Dickens at West Manor Park
