Atlanta Jazz Festival Announces Youth Jazz Band Competition For March 21

High School Jazz Bands Invited To Compete For Chance To Perform At Festival

Youth Jazz Band Competition - photo by Robin L Marshall Atlanta, GA — “The Atlanta Jazz Festival is committed to the ongoing education of the next generation of jazz musicians,” says Camille Russell Love, Executive Director of the City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs. “Our annual Youth Jazz Band Competition provides a fabulous showcase for young aspiring musicians to compete on a professional level. It also gives them a unique opportunity to earn a performance slot at the festival in Piedmont Park.”

The Atlanta Jazz Festival Youth Jazz Band Competition will take place on Saturday, March 21 from 9 am to 4 pm and is being hosted by the Georgia State University School of Music in their Kopleff Recital Hall. Adjudicators are directors of university jazz departments. Lunch will be provided for participants and their Band Leaders. The deadline to register for the competition is February 20 at 5 pm. Interested High School bands should email JAGrant@AtlantaGa.Gov to request an application, or they can go to the web site and download the form here:

Competition is open to Georgia Department of Education accredited High Schools (grades 9-12) in all 28 metro Atlanta counties. The first 10 bands that register will be allowed to compete. Bands will be competing for a scholarship for their music program, as well as a chance to perform during the Atlanta Jazz Festival in May.

The public is welcome to come and enjoy the Youth Jazz Band Competition. The event is free, with seating available on a first come, first served basis.
