In Jazzmeia Horn’s course, “Jazzmeia’s Four Elements of Focus : The Art of Storytelling, Sing Your Own Song, My Stage Is My Altar, and Everybody’s Got Style,” the world renown, award-winning, African American, woman, performing jazz artist guides students on how to personally overcome issues of race, identity, gender, and culture while thriving in performance. In preparation for the many peaks and valleys of life’s journey, this course uses jazz music to enable students to successfully perform comfortably within themselves no matter their race, identity, class, gender, culture, or political stance. Attendees will be encouraged to build a foundation for self-motivation, self-determination, self-love, and liberation.

The focus of the course is to share Jazzmeia’s Approach–a more cultured perspective balancing jazz’s rich history in the African American experience and the spirituality of its essence. Those who attend the class will be instructed on what are called “Jazzmeia’s Four Elements of Focus”: The Art of Storytelling, Sing Your Own Song, My Stage Is My Altar, and Everybody’s Got Style. Additional instruction time will be spent on improvisation and performing with a live band, as well as offering constructive criticism which students can use to continue their growth after the course.
